Leigh Post Office under threat of closure

Leigh Post Office is one of over a hundred branches which could close as part of a "transformation plan"

The Post Office has published a list of branches which it says it will close, or seek alternative franchising arrangements in which a third party could operate the branch.

The branches employ around 1000 people nationally and have been identified as "significantly loss making"

The wholly-owned branches, often referred to as Crown Offices, are under threat as part of the Post Office's plans to set its finances on a sustainable long-term footing.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) said that for the company to propose the plans as the inquiry into the Horizon IT scandal continues was "immoral" and "tone deaf".

As part of the overhaul, hundreds of jobs at its head office are also under threat.
